OBO Super: Square-set Americana serif
Third in the OBO series by Juri Zaech, this type collection starts from a square. Every character maps to a 1×1 ratio, so it holds its shape in horizontal and vertical settings alike—or mixed, like crosswords. That strict geometry makes it especially suited to layouts where rhythm, alignment, and grid logic matter.
The design reads as a soft, heavy serif motivated by vintage lettering of the West. It carries a 70s Americana look, reminiscent of times when photography was shot on film and mixtapes were recorded on cassettes. Use it for contemporary motorcycle apparel branding with an American West spirit, or for signage and menus that need a hint of diner grease.
At its core, OBO Super is monospaced. Every letter has the same width, and each letter is as tall as it is wide—supporting horizontal, vertical, or mixed layouts. For strictly horizontal typesetting, you can turn on kerning and swap in alternative designs for a number of characters to create a cleaner texture across words and phrases.
OBO Super feels most at home in cool branding projects and display settings. A series of icons and arrows completes the extensive character set.
